the Canary – Campaigning Journalism

The Canary delivers progressive, open and rigorous campaigning journalism, which means focusing on news, ideas and key developments that impact democracy, equality, freedom and fairness, but also empower people with the knowledge to become actively involved in changing their world.

The Editor-in-Chief of The Canary is Kerry-anne Mendoza, an active campaigner known for creating one of the UK’s top independent political blogs, Scriptonite Daily, and authoring the best-seller book ‘Austerity: The Demolition of the Welfare State and the Rise of the Zombie Economy’.

She has been a contributor for several major news organisations such as The Guardian, openDemocracy, the New Internationalist and RT UK, and in 2015, Mendoza co-founded The Canary with the mission to deliver “campaigning journalism that informs and empowers people to change their world” and the vision of “a free and fair society where we nurture people and planet”.

The Canary states that “Today, a handful of powerful moguls control our mainstream media. As such, its coverage is largely conservative. But we have created a truly independent and viable alternative. One that isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo, to ask the hard questions, and to have an opinion”.

The team at The Canary believe passionately that a functioning democracy requires informed consent from its citizens. Their aim is to help generate that informed consent by providing readers with high-quality, well-researched and incisive journalism that holds power to account.

Built with absolutely no financial backing or outside investment, The Canary remains completely independent of any advertisers, funders, companies, political organisations, or political parties, and is funded by their innovative income share or shared equity business model.

Democratising media creation is a central aim of The Canary. Net profit is split with 45% going to the writers, 30% to editors and 25% to the leadership team. That’s it.

They are expanding their media output with regular podcasts, video interviews and news reports, as well as a membership platform designed to give readers a say in the media they see by deciding on the areas The Canary investigate.

In short, The Canary is written, edited and compiled by a team of exceptional journalists, who contribute huge time and energy into making possible the delivery of free, fair and fearless media.

Discussion Point

Can independent news media run by passionate journalists who listen to their readers and actively campaign for democracy, equality, freedom and fairness help create a more democratic media and an informed, engaged public who have a direct impact on the change they want to see in the world?
